How does cold therapy work -
and when is it the right choice?
How does cold therapy work?
Cold constricts the blood vessels in the affected area, reduces the metabolism in the tissue and slows down the transmission of pain stimuli. The result: less swelling, less pain - without medication.
Cold vs heat therapy
Heat promotes blood circulation - ideal for chronic tension. In the case of acute injuries or recently operated joints, however, heat would increase the swelling. Cold therapy stops the inflammatory reaction exactly where it occurs.
The rule of thumb: always cool sprains, bruises, strains and post-operative swelling first. Cooling + compression combined additionally accelerates the removal of swelling fluid - and is therefore more effective than cold alone.
Reduce swelling
Cold inhibits inflammatory reactions in the tissue immediately after the trauma
Relieve pain
Slowed nerve conduction ensures noticeable pain reduction without medication
Recover faster
Early mobilization after surgery or injury possible through targeted decongestion
Recover safely at home
After a knee or ankle operation, reliable cold therapy is needed - without effort, without external devices, applicable directly at home.
- Pain relief & swelling reduction after knee replacement, cruciate ligament surgery or ankle surgery
- Easy to use at home - no devices, no electricity required
- Medically approved (CE medical device) - supports early mobilization
A quick "back to sport"
Whether a sprain, bruise or strain - the Lumark cooling bandage is the ideal first aid treatment directly on the pitch or in the cabin.
- Immediate cooling for sports injuries such as sprains & strains

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Lumark cryotherapy at a glance.
Cold therapy - also known medically as cryotherapy - is the targeted use of cold to relieve pain and support regeneration. Cold constricts the blood vessels in the affected area, inhibits inflammatory reactions, reduces swelling and slows down the nerve conduction speed for pain stimuli. The result: less pain, less swelling - without any medication.
The Lumark System is aimed at two main target groups: athletes and clubs who need to act immediately in the event of acute injuries such as sprains, bruises or strains - and patients who need reliable cold and compression therapy at home following knee or ankle surgery.
The PECH rule is the tried and tested first aid treatment for acute sports injuries: Rest (stop exertion), ice (cooling), compression (pressure), elevation. The Lumark cooling bandage implements two of these steps in one: It specifically cools the affected area and at the same time exerts individually adjustable compression pressure. This makes it the ideal immediate measure for athletes who need to react quickly and easily - without the need for ice cubes, wet towels or separate bandages.
Cold therapy is the right choice for acute injuries, fresh swelling and post-operative complaints - it constricts blood vessels and inhibits inflammation. Heat therapy, on the other hand, promotes blood circulation and is suitable for chronic muscle tension and stiffness. Heat for acute swelling can even increase inflammation. Rule of thumb: Acute → cold. Chronic/tight → heat.
Cooling reduces post-operative swelling and pain without medication. Compression also supports the removal of swelling fluid and stabilizes the joint. The Lumark system is CE-certified (CE medical device) as a medical device and specially designed for post-operative care of the knee and ankle joint - easy to use at home, without external devices or electricity.
The Lumark system consists of an anatomically shaped support, integrated cooling gel packs and a manual hand pump. Cool the cooling packs for at least 2 hours, insert them into the support, apply the support and build up the desired compression pressure with the hand pump. No external devices, no electricity - simply cool, apply and set the pressure.
The Lumark cooling bandage is suitable for sprains, bruises, strains and overloading - as well as for post-operative care of the knee and ankle joint. Cold therapy must not be used for open wounds, sensitivity to cold, circulatory disorders or sensitive skin. If in doubt, always seek medical advice.
Cycles of 20 minutes of cooling followed by a 10 minute break are recommended. This cycle can be repeated several times a day. In the post-operative phase or in the case of acute injuries, the frequency of application should be discussed with the attending physician or physiotherapist.
Compression enhances the effect of cold therapy in several ways: it actively promotes the removal of swelling fluid from the tissue, ensures more even skin contact of the cold pack and stabilizes the affected joint. The combination of cooling + compression - as stipulated in the PECH rule - is demonstrably more effective than cooling alone.
Yes, the Lumark Cooling & Compression System bears the CE mark (CE medical device) and is classified as a medical device (MD). It fulfills the applicable EU requirements for medical devices and was developed in accordance with international standards.
Cold therapy is not suitable for: open wounds or skin injuries, known sensitivity to cold or cold allergy, circulatory disorders and directly on sensitive skin. In the case of post-operative use, always consult your doctor. If unsure, seek medical advice before use.
Both the bandage and the cool packs are designed for unlimited, repeated use. Simply re-cool the cool packs after each use. The bandage can be cleaned with a damp cloth if necessary. There is no maximum number of applications - the system is designed to last.
